A New World

sirenaurora I have a lot of albums that I love not just as collections of songs but as *albums*. I have albums that I can listen to two or three times in a day, or that I listen to when I've had a horrible week. Several of those albums are by Black Lab. I don't think I've ever had an album that made me *want* like this one does. It's an incoherent and nonspecific wanting, like the music found a gaping hole in my chest and is pouring in.

It's classic Black Lab that highlights their dark and brooding side.
Favorite track: A New World.

wonder if this is the light at the end wonder if this is the water closing in i won't let myself drown here but i can't keep my head up no more i'm looking for something to hold and the strength to hold on here you are you'll sink in this bottomless sea praying out you'll sink in this bottomless sea you'll break on it these hard waters praying now for the hours to run pray to god for the daylight to come and i go over the wall down past the drive up to the cliffs follow me outside here you are you'll sink in this bottomless sea praying out you'll sink in this bottomless sea you'll break on it calling out for mercy these hard waters floating far out on this sea try to see the loss as part of life instead of life as something i lost

Tell a Lie 04:16
i tell a lie to myself and no one else knows this seventh hell And i go blind from what i've done and this fire devours me i can't face myself for all this blood i tell a lie to get me through this night and we get by, we all gotta survive i tell a lie to your face and no one doubts me it gets erased no one holds me, no one else can see i tell a lie to get me through this night and we get by, we all gotta survive

i take one step one look, one breath i come down brick by brick by brick i run until I slip it all comes down to this if i give it all to you if i fall in front of you would you show me everything that lies beneath this black and blue I'll give it all to you my love if I give it all to you if I hand over what's due tear down the walls that rise and fall between the truth I'll give it all to you my love I can see your backbone working reaching up for what it's worth and these stars a million miles around us they're flying around us

Island 04:18
i turn, i smile -- hello, goodbye the world goes by in a dream and i pretend i'm here in this skin but i am gone -- lost in the trees on this island, this island things go nowhere nothing lives and nothing dies on this island, this island no future but the tide rolling in and out of sight i watch the waves for days and days in this grief i wonder how you got out you just stepped out where are you now? you just stepped out leaving me on this island, this island things go nowhere nothing lives and nothing dies on this island, this island no future but the rising tide the way you cried out the way you held me down the way you'd melt right in my hands the way you turned me round the way you left me on my own here alone on this island, this island things go nowhere nothing lives and nothing dies on this island, this island and yeah i remember your face less every day i'm locked in this cage lost here on this island, no future but the tide rolling in and out of sight

A New World 03:54
here is a child buried alive in my chest there is a stranger makes himself home in my bed and I don't believe even what I can see for myself I can see for myself through the bars of this cell everybody wants to find a new world everybody's looking for a sign every day is tender as a sunburn why can't I find mine? why can't I find mine? give me a mountain of silver and gold and I'll stop build me a box of velvet and pine and I'll drop but ask me to live what I know see I choke and I cough yeah I choke on my scotch can you see what i've lost even when the grass burns black I'm waiting for it and even the future cracks I'm waiting for it and even you don't come back I'm waiting for it I'm waiting for it I'm waiting for it I'm turning over like an engine turning over till i catch

this cruel world is beautiful in the strangest ways at the end of the darkest nightcomes the finest of days but you know sometimes you fall so hard  sometimes it hurts so bad when you can't see the end hold on to your friends till your heart comes back to life and i say keep holding out for more keep holding strong in the storm it's just a matter of time keep holding out for love keep holding your head above it's just a matter of time i know things change just wait for the good things to come at the end of the darkest night comes the light of the sun say - hold on to the best things you got now  and grow something new with the rain in your soul keep holding out for more keep holding strong in the storm it's just a matter of time keep holding out for love keep holding your head above it's just a matter of time yeah, i'll be here i'll be here for you take my hand take good care i'll be here for you

breaking rocks in the hot sun I fought the law and the law won I needed money 'cause I had none I fought the law and the law won I left my baby and it feels so bad guess my race is run she's the best girl that I ever had I fought the law and the law won robbing people with a six-gun I fought the law and the law won I lost my girl and I lost my fun I fought the law and the law won I fought the law and the law won

it's the rage it gives and it takes and are you lying down or are you nailed to a stake? there's nowhere you can go they don't already know so where will you run? you're hiding in your skin hiding on the fringe but where where will you run? don't take it hard you know a fist to the face can be painful remember? the day you find out that your heart's been replaced by a stranger ~ stop sitting with the dead slipping through the trees a bullet to the head can bring you to your knees listening to the black the voices on the wire they're breathing through the stacks go build yourself a fire
9.
i am no survivor nothing here survived dying on that road with you dissolving in that fire so how do i go forward dear when you were my whole life i go down to the river without you i lay down i go down to the river without you i lay down i’m too weak to remember too sad to forget rushing down the steepness to feed and to be fed so if i beg you one more time to lay me down to rest go go go and find it don't come home without it in these weaker moments leave it there so thin the air the wall the will to move on so thin the air i go down to the river without you i lay down i go down to the river without you i lay down

The Road 04:36
this is the ache inside this is darkness in my hand keep me in line, keep me in line this is the road that I get lost on a twist in the road and I'll be gone now it's a matter of time just a matter of time black, black is the tide black water running down and I get crazy I get blind raise my hands and start to drown throw me a line, throw me a line so this is the road that I get lost on a twist in the road and I'll be gone now and I know there's a place that I belong yeah and I know there's a way where I'll come home now it's a matter of time just a matter of time
11.
can you hold it inside without letting on you're gonna do? have you said your goodbyes? are you happy it will all be over soon? could you bury it deep? sing yourself back to sleep? could you stand to go on much longer or will you have your revenge on life and all of your friends all you want is the end but can you wait can you wait while the world circles the sun and hey can you wait while the world finds a way to bring you love bring you love can i hold it inside? get up go to work, as if there's nothing wrong pretend that i'm still alive that i'm still breathing and there's anything i want if i could find a side door slip out somehow be no more like i had never been born at all no like i was not even here no one left here in tears if i could listen i know that she would say can you wait while the world circles the sun and hey can you wait while the world finds a way to bring you love to bring you love bring you love

about

this is the sixth album by black lab, years of blood, sweat, gin, joy, struggle and transcendence -- tears and much unseemly laughter, crashed cars and inscrutable dreams, the death of a lover and the discovery of love, hallucinogens and unimagined ghosts. this is the record of a past we can't forget and a future we can't wait to see, one we want so much for you to hear. this is a new world.

in memory of bhu sullivan, 1978-2014
